On January 19th 2019, 200 women and men gathered at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel for the second annual LadiesFirst! Summit for Women in Leadership. Over 25 influencers and leaders gave talks and took part in panels throughout the full day event that included a lunch buffet and entertainment from AfroSoul artist Kenneth Mugabi.
The conversations at the event focused on women empowerment and the challenges that women face as leaders or on their journey to becoming leaders. However, their impact was beneficial to both men and women as attendees learned invaluable lessons in wellbeing, managing families, managing wealth, entrepreneurship, career growth and relationships.
Former Minister of Agriculture and President of the Uganda Agribusiness Alliance, Hon. Victoria Sekitoleko was the keynote speaker. Mixing in stories from her personal experiences, Hon. Sekitoleko encouraged women to stick together on their journey to leadership and to embrace leadership challenges with positivity as they work together to overcome them.
The most exciting outcome of LadiesFirst!2019 was the formation of a leadership network that will connect African women on all continents and create new opportunities for business and mentorship. All LadiesFirst!2019 attendees get a two year membership. Stay tuned for a special launch!
In her thank you note, Miss Uganda North America President Tibba Murungi Kabugu expressed appreciation “… to the many individuals and organizations who contributed to the success of the 2nd Annual Miss Uganda North America Cares Tour of Uganda.” The LadiesFirst! Summit is a part of the annual Cares Tour of Uganda by Miss Uganda North America. “The empowerment of women and girls is the whole society’s job. We must constantly assess our beliefs, our cultures, our laws and our environment to ensure that the future provides an equal footing for men and women. An empowered woman is good for the social and economic outlook of the entire world,” she added.
